Training at the Huntsman Cancer Institute (a member institution of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network), the University of Utah, Primary Children's Hospital, and ARUP Laboratories (a nationally known reference laboratory) means exposure to the full spectrum of what pathology entails. For example, the Pathologist-on-Call service at ARUP Laboratories provides trainees with an opportunity to consult on challenging and interesting clinical chemistry, toxicology, and immunology cases across all our laboratory divisions with clients from Hawaii to New York. But what truly sets us apart? Our people. Our faculty and staff are deeply invested in your growth and offer a level of expertise and support that's hard to beat. Whatever your passion within pathology, you'll find enthusiastic mentors ready to guide you.
Life here isn't confined to the lab or hospital, either. Utah is an outdoor enthusiast's dream. Outside of work, with five national parks and forty-three state parks packed inside Utah, you can embark on a new adventure every weekend. Each season brings a different vibe and world-class outdoor experiences. Closer to home, Salt Lake City offers its own vibrant scene. You can catch a performance by the symphony or the Tabernacle Choir, enjoy outdoor concerts, and explore a fantastic food scene with friends. If you've got kids, there's a zoo, aquarium, engaging museums, and plenty of public parks to keep them busy. Our residents are a diverse bunch with all sorts of interests, both indoors and out, and they're excited to welcome you to Utah.

The University of Utah Pathology Residency Program gives residents a well-balanced anatomic and clinical pathology education. The Anatomic Pathology division is located on the third floor of the Huntsman Cancer Institute and has amazing views of the entire Salt Lake Valley! Here we see a diverse set of over 30,000 in-house surgical pathology cases and have opportunities to be involved in consult surgical pathology cases from institutions throughout the United States. Additionally, as a National Comprehensive Cancer Network member institution with an associated children’s hospital, our program draws patients and cases from across the country. Ongoing clinical trials offer clinical/translational research opportunities and provide access to the diverse breadth and depth of cases necessary for high-quality anatomic pathology training.
Clinical pathology training is housed at the expansive and cutting-edge laboratory facilities of ARUP Laboratories, one of the largest non-profit reference labs in the United States. ARUP has a focus on high-volume and esoteric testing, with over 75 nationally recognized clinical pathology medical directors across all disciplines. Training here allows us to learn directly from specialized clinical pathology experts with an education that focuses on hands-on and operationalized laboratory testing.
