Introducing Dr. Jeffrey Jacobsen

Introducing Dr. Jeffrey Jacobsen

The Department of Pathology is pleased to introduce Jeffrey Jacobsen, MD as a recent addition to the faculty. Dr. Jacobsen is a hematopathologist located at ARUP.

He is a familiar face to many in the department, as he completed his residency and fellowship at the University of Utah. Dr. Jacobsen worked at St. Jude Hospital and Phoenix Hospital before returning to Utah in November 2021.

While working toward his MD at the University of Illinois, Dr. Jacobsen’s interest in clinical pathology led him to complete an away rotation at ARUP. His experience at ARUP then led him to pursue the residency program here.

Although Dr. Jacobsen spends most of his clinical time in the flow cytometry laboratory, he also serves as the Program Director for the hematopathology fellowship program. In his role with the fellowship program, he ensures that each fellow is receiving high-quality training for a future as a hematopathologist. A major challenge he and the fellows are facing is the publication of two new competing classifications.

One of Dr. Jacobsen’s goals is to advance ARUP’s molecular diagnostic test offering to recognize new types of pediatric leukemia. He aims to collaborate with colleagues on the clinical side in hematology and oncology, laboratory colleagues in genetics and genomics to provide helpful and actionable information.

In addition, Dr. Jacobsen coordinates the white blood cell lecture for the medical students.

Outside of the lab and the classroom, he enjoys being outdoors and exploring nature with his kids.
