Medical Laboratory Science Summer Immersion Program (June 20-24, 2022)

2023 Program Overview

Have you ever wondered what happens to that tube of blood that is drawn from your arm when you visit the doctor’s office? Are you curious about what information can be revealed from the components of that blood sample? With a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, you can study how to analyze what is contained in a variety of biological specimens, including blood, urine, and other body fluids and tissues. These tests employ the use of specialized equipment, such as microscopes and complex analyzers. The testing, analysis, and reporting of patient results to a physician are performed by a medical laboratory scientist. Information provided by medical laboratory scientists serves an important role in identifying and treating medical conditions. It is estimated that 60-70% of all medical decisions regarding a patient’s diagnosis and treatment are based on the results of the tests performed by medical laboratory scientists.

Our one-week program held June 26-30, 2023 will immerse you in a medical laboratory experience, where you will perform tests in hematology, immunology, microbiology, chemistry, molecular diagnostics, blood banking, and hemostasis. You will be introduced to all of these areas of study, and will work collaboratively to evaluate the results from these analyses to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of disease. After completing the program, you will have a better appreciation of the complexity of biological specimens, and how much information you can learn about the health of a patient from medical laboratory testing. Students interested in learning more about medical laboratory science may enroll in our semester-long Survey of Medical Laboratory Science (MD LB 101) course at the University of Utah, which is open to high school students.

Program Benefits

  • Discover hidden information in the human body.
  • Explore how to reveal that hidden information.
  • Participate in hands-on activities common to medical laboratory testing.
  • Practice skills that will assist you in performing complex lab testing.
  • Sample the breadth of subjects you will study in the Medical Laboratory Science Program at the University of Utah.

Application Requirements

This program is designed for students who like science, are curious about how the body works, and have an interest in learning about medical laboratory testing. Students should be at least 16 years of age at the start of program and entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year of high school. If you are interested in participating in this one-week program, please fill out the online apply by March 3, 2023.

A limited number of stipends are available to support housing, travel, and meal costs for under-represented students, students from rural communities, and students experiencing financial hardship. Instructions to apply for a stipend are available within the program application.

Individuals accepted to the program will be required to complete a registration form and submit a non-refundable $25.00 fee to reserve their spot.
