
Minor in Medical Laboratory Science
The minor in Medical Laboratory Science complements STEM majors such as nursing, emergency medical services, kinesiology, biology, chemistry, and biomedical engineering. Completion of the minor will provide students with a rich educational experience focused on diagnostic laboratory testing. It is particularly beneficial for students aiming to enhance their preparation for graduate programs in healthcare-related fields such as medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, nursing, and physician assistant studies.
Note that this minor does not qualify an individual to sit for any board examination in MLS. For those considering a second bachelor's degree in MLS after completing the minor, it may be possible to apply coursework from the minor towards the required coursework. Students pursuing a minor in MLS must complete the following required core courses and at least 8 credit hours of electives. Students are encouraged to complete the core courses early in their academic career, as they prepare students for the content in the elective courses. As a primarily upper-division minor, students should plan to complete the majority of elective courses during their junior and senior year.
Required Core Courses (complete 8–9 credits):
- BIOL 1610 - Fundamental Principles of Biology I (4 Cr.) OR
- BIOL 2020 - Principles of Cell Biology (3 Cr.)
- BIOL 2420 - Human Physiology (4 Cr.)
- MD LB 1010 - Survey of Medical Laboratory Sciences (1 Cr.)
Elective Course (complete at least 8 credits):
- MD LB 4100 - Clinical Immunology (2 Cr.)
- MD LB 4200 - Clinical Chemistry (4 Cr.)
- MD LB 4300 - Clinical Hematology (3 Cr.)
- MD LB 4400 - Clinical Immunohematology (3 Cr.)
- PATH 3100 - Introduction to Medical Microbiology (3 Cr.)
To be admitted to the MLS minor program, students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5, be in good standing with their home department and the University, and meet with one of the MLS academic advisors to complete an application. Students should demonstrate strong academic performance in STEM coursework. Completed MLS minor applications will be reviewed by faculty in the MLS division to evaluate the applicant’s potential for successful program completion.
